On Tenney Circle lightning hit a transformer, completely burning out its “in nards.” Current was off several! hours while the old transformer j was removed and a new $400 j regulator was hoisted into place. | (Primary fuses were knocked out in at least four other neighbor-1 hood areas. ' AND TUESDAY MORNING AT! 11:44 a truck careened into a power pole along the Airport ftd. hill and slapped 7.200VOU lines together, causing a short circuit that knocked out current far a large surrounding area. The truck, loaded with barber and beauty shop supplies, was driven by Clarence W. Ball of Durham, who told investigating police a truck ran him off the road. He was slightly injured, while his vehicle was substan tially demolished. The atmos phere along the hillside was pungently heavy for many hours with the aroma of smashed oint ment and lotion bottles. A $4,200 A YEAR COUNTY job is going begging, at least momentarily. The county com missioners noted at their meet ing Tuesday night that there was a dearth of qualified applicants for the post of Assistant Clerk of Superior Court for Orange County. The position, held for a number of years by Lucius Cheshire of Hillsboro, will be come vacant next fall when Mr. Cheshire enters the Law School of the University at Chapel Hill. . Cates Jr. report ed that he spent $30 in behalf of the campaign of Carl Smith . for county commissioner, all Un beknown to the candidate. Re cipient of or purpose of the ex penditure was not designated. POLICE WERE CALLED TO a house in the N. Columbia St. area of Chapel Hill about11 p. m. Tuesday to investigate a peeping tom report. Patrolman Lbidy Pendergrass noted a sus picious looking person behind one house as he pulled up to the area. He hopped out of Ws patrol car and gave chase, fi - "ally losing his quarry after a chase of several blocks through thickets and across hedges and fences.
